DENTOSTAT- STATISTICS IN DENTISTRY

Hi Friends, I welcome you all.

Now I am here to share with you regarding various dental statistics. I am also going to tell you where we stand at this moment of time.

In India for every 10,000 persons we have one dentist available in rural areas and in the urban areas are about 2.5lakh. The dentist present in the urban is three- fourths of the total, which consists only one-fourth of the population.

BACHELOR OF DENTAL SURGERY:

First I am going tell how to get admission to a BDS college (it’s for the forthcoming dentists.)

High school students with a background in physics (p), chemistry(c) and biology (b) are eligible to apply to dental colleges. Remember if you want to seat for any entrance exam you have to pursue 50% in PCB together for general candidates.

There are three options for a student to get admission in dental colleges. State-administered entrance exams, common all-India entrance exams (for which all eligible students qualify) and Private college-administered entrance exam.

MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY:

With an increasing awareness in the society of the oral health and changing treatment needs, there has been a greater demand for specialists in dentistry. As of now we have we had many colleges providing MDS courses. Now a day’s demand is more in various institutions.

Going to gulf countries has been a fascinating and money making places for dentists, but now even they are seeking dentists with minimum 2 years experience, hence MDS has become a mandatory for every dentist who seeks for more secure future.

Also, taking into the consideration the aspiration of the students for higher education, we certainly need more postgraduates.

To create adequate, respectable and attractive employment opportunities to the work force while maintaining a balanced geographical distribution is the main challenge and root of all the issues facing the dental profession in India. Unsatisfactory employment opportunities in various areas lead to migration to the major cities and towns, which disturbs the balance of the dentist to the population ratio and further aggravates employment in these cities and metro areas. This further leads to immigration to other nations, leading to reduced dentist to population ratios. This vicious cycle has to stop to reach to the root of the problem and begin providing sufficient employment opportunities in a well-distributed manner.

STATISTICS:

Less than one dentist for 10,000 Indians

NEW DELHI: India is facing a severe shortage of dentists.

The World Statistics 2012, released on Wednesday by the World Health Organization (WHO), says India has less than 1 dentist (0.8) per 10,000 populations. In absolute numbers, there are only 93,332 dentists.

India's neighbors, however, are worse off.

Though China has 51,012 dentists, the density is as low as 0.4 per 10,000 population.

Bangladesh has 0.2 dentists per 10,000 population; Pakistan (0.6), Sri Lanka (0.8) and Afghanistan (0.3).

In comparison, developed countries like Greece has 13.2 dentists per 10,000 populations, Norway (8.9), Israel (8.8), Denmark (8.1), Germany (7.8), Japan (7.4),

Australia (6.9), France (6.8) and the UK (5.3).

The Planning Commission says oral diseases qualify as major public health problems owing to their high prevalence in India. It says oral diseases restrict activities at school and work, causing millions of school and work hours to be lost each year throughout the world.

"Oral disease burden in India is very high due to several reasons. Many oral health surveys have been done and the prevalence of various oral diseases in the population are Dental Caries (40%-45%), periodontal diseases (advanced disease in 40%), malocclusion (30% of children), Oral cancer (12.6 per lakhs population), dental fluorosis endemic in 230 districts of 19 states, Edentulousness (tooth loss) 19%-32% of elderly population above 65 years. Given the burden of oral diseases in our country and their impact, oral diseases need to be paid attention to," the Plan panel says,

India has 6.5 physicians per 10,000 population (7.57 lakhs physicians) and 10 nurses (11.46 lakhs). It also has 5.78 lakhs pharmaceutical personnel - 5.2 per 10,000 populations.

The country also has just nine hospital beds per 10,000 population, and only 3,656 psychiatrists.

Hence this to be noted that even today our country is in great demand of dentist. So my friends you should be considered lucky to join the profession of such great present and bright future.

As I have told in the first post regarding the various scopes of dentistry, here I have given you the real picture where we stand as of now.
