Hello
My friends, fellow readers, well wishers. I welcome you all to this informative blog about future of Dentists in India.
If you are here, you are either a dental graduate, post graduate, dental student or a future dentist of our country.Be
frank to yourself and ask why you choose or will choose this field. We
are either here with our choice or with no choice (as we couldn’t crack
MBBS seat) if you ask me I will choose the later one.
Here I will not tell you how to crack an entrance exam as there are a lot of blogs and websites that deal with this topic. I chose to write this blog to make you Ru-ba-ru with the future of dentistry.
The one GOLDEN question that arises in every undergraduate student’s mind is
“WHAT DO I DO AFTER I PASS BDS???”
Even I had that query in my mind and there were only two answers I used to get:
Open a clinic and wait for the government jobs
I
was never a bright or studious student hence cracking a PG seat was
unlikely, though I made an effort but was in vain. Therefore I chose to
go for the clinic part.
But
again, these days if you are studying in a private college you don’t
have too much of exposure and if your college offers PG courses then
patient count reduces further. So you decide to get trained under some
senior dentists. But mostly it happens that the senior dentist under
whom you are training does not share much of his/her cases with you. At
the end of the day you are left to do mundane activities like scaling
and few extractions. But if you earn your senior’s faith you are given
few of his/her cases to handle.
Though it seems a little rude but that’s the fact. Senior
doctors are reluctant to handle over the cases to the juniors because
those patients/cases are earned by them hence they are hesitant to
handover the cases to the less experienced dentists like us.
But friends don’t be disheartened as I am going to tell you some better options in my blog.Coming
to my story again, I did my training under some good and successful
dentists. In between I was trying my luck in private sectors and after
about two years I got an appointment letter in a company in Kolkata.
So
it was a hard time for me in these two years. It was a struggling
period but nevertheless I have gained immense exposure and experience as
well. I
came to know that other than the two options mentioned above we actually
have many options/areas where there is comparatively less competition
and better future in coming years.
So without further delay, I am going to share my knowledge with you and brief you about the dental scope...
Have a look at the list of opportunities…….
"Please remember the following list doesn’t include regular options or fields like opening a clinic or joining a hospital."
1. TPA
What
is it? TPA means third party administration. You must have heard about
health insurance like National Insurance, United India Insurance, Royal
Sundaram, Reliance and the likes. These companies have tie up with TPA
for the adjudication of health claims (cashless or reimbursement medical
claims)
Why will they choose dentist?
Because getting medical graduates to a non clinical job is a hard one hence they accept dental graduates, BAMS, and BHMS too.
Few TPA’s are
a) Medicare TPA(Kolkata)
b) Heritage TPA (pan India)
c) Medi Assist India TPA Pvt. Ltd.
d) MD India Healthcare (TPA) Services (Pvt.) Ltd. Etc
You can get the entire list of TPA from the IMAGE below
2. Insurance company
As mentioned above insurance companies dealing with health policies also needs doctors including dentists for them.

3. Medical IT
Yes IT i.e. information technology. This is an industry which is ready to boom in near future in our country.
Now you must be thinking what is this medical IT??
Well
friends, the companies that deals with manufacturing health products,
medical equipments etc. requires medical expertise to guide them. So,
dentist has a great opportunity in this sector.
There
is one more type of IT company who develops HMS (hospital management
system). This is now gaining popularity as many renowned hospitals are
running under HMS.
So what is this HMS?
IT
Company with the help of medical professionals builds software that
records everything in their database like enrolling a patient till their
discharge. Have you heard about e-prescription? It is also a part of
HMS. Here the doctors don’t have to use their pen. A patient’s whole
data starting from complain to their treatment, are entered into the
computer which is again saved into the data base. Therefore the patient
does not have to carry his documents as it will be saved in the database
for future use.
Just imagine medical knowledge plus IT knowledge - It’s an incredible combination! And this has excellent pay package!
4. Clinical research:
This
needs a training which can also be a part time course and you can do it
in your internship (kindly remember if you are studying for pg entrance
then I would suggest you not to think about this course)
After
completion of the program either your institute would help you or guide
you to get a job or you have to search for yourself. But these days if
search in leading jobs portal you would see scores of them. I would
request my friends to be wise to choose the correct institute as there
are many frauds institutes guarantying you jobs. But beware they might cheat you. So be alert and gain proper knowledge before joining.
5. ICD coding,Medical Transcriptionist,Medical Biller
What is the full form of ICD? ICD means international classification of disease
This
again needs a training program which can also be done online. Many kpo
(knowledge process outsourcing) and bpo companies needs ICD coders.
Again I would alert you before joining any institute, take a detailed
review about it.

6. Medical Writing
Medical
writing needs a training which can be taken online. You can either work
as a full time professional or as a freelancer depending upon the job
availability/requirement at that moment.
There are also other programs you can choose like,
a. Master of hospital administration
b. MBA and various others
In
this blog post I discussed multiple job profiles/opportunities which a
dentist can have other than the regular cycle of clinics, hospitals etc.
In my upcoming post I will discuss about the dental statistics in India.
